Ensuring Your Child's Safety

When it comes to motorcycle safety, the most important group to be concerned about is young people. Your child may wish to ride a motorcycle; if you allow them to do it the responsibility for safety measures is up to you. The child will never think of safety first, it's your job to find and purchase a motorcycle helmet that will prevent the most dangerous type of injury-head and neck injury.

Essential is a good fit and correct sizing for the child or teen. A helmet can only work when it is worn and if it stays on during an accident. Motorcycle helmet dealers should always have personnel on-site to assist you in sizing and fit.

When shopping for the correct helmet for the child, they should come along for the trip. It's just like shopping for shoes or clothing, a proper fit can only be achieved if they're there to try on the item.

When you're at the shop, you should choose several helmets that you believe suit your child's needs. Then have him try on each one and wear it for at least five minutes to check for any spots that may be too tight or uncomfortable. Checking in a mirror will help to check out symmetry and head shape. The helmet should rest just above the eyebrows and not cause chafing in any one spot. Check carefully for red spots when the helmet is removed, this will be a clue to adjust or reject it.

Just like clothing, the internal lining of a helmet can conform to headshape and become more comfortable. But like shoes, don't count on them to stretch and get more comfortable with time, it won't happen just because you like that helmet better than the others.  Anti-scratch and anti-fog treatments are normally applied to helmets, these are important so check for them. One thing that's commonly overlooked is to check that the visor doesn't touch the outer shell and cause the visor to become scratched.

It's difficult to get just that perfect weight-to-safety ratio in a child's motorcycle helmet. A helmet that is lightweight and thus more comfortable may not provide the same safety margin. Remember protection is your foremost consideration. Getting the correct fit for the child's head can make up for the increased weight and provide added comfort. This will increase the likelihood that your child will always wear it.

Daily storage of the helmet after purchase can greatly increase the working life of the helmet. A high or precarious storage location can lead to the helmet hitting the ground, damaging it and reducing its ability to protect the rider. Don't place the helmet on the motorcycle saddle, handlebars or mirror, this can damage the lining which will make it fit poorly and reduce its lifespan. Motorcycle helmets are expensive, good care and maintenance can protect your investment.
